Fantastic article, Andy.

I liked your notion of the radical currents running through Scotland. Different issues rear their heads in different places and different communities, it is important that this conference encompasses the whole of Scotland: urban and rural; highlands and lowlands; east and west.
That it seeks to look forward to a future independent nation that can be looked to for inspiration observing the Scottish NHS in the same way that people look to Cuba's healthcare system. That can welcome asylum seekers rather than dump them homeless on the streets or leave them for the security officers to pick up and take to a detention centre in the morning. That can seek to break some of the imperial power of a major military nation.

Surrounded by union jacks, in M&S, Next and even ASDA, with the British Broadcasting Corporation spewing out unionist propaganda on huge screens in every public building 1984-like in between updating us on the latest frock of an overprivilaged royal victim, I feel the British state surround me in a way that I haven't done before.

We have a massive opportunity in 2014 and we must grab it with both hands.

Great points about post-independent Scotland. The removal of nuclear weapons and all British bases is a must if Scotland returns a yes vote.

The 'Right To Buy' was not a fine achievement. It created a housing gap still not being met today leaving societies poorest unable to find appropriate housing that meets their own/families needs.

I can't remember what the report was called but at the start of her prime ministerial term a report concluded that to decrease poverty the government should in fact increase the social housing stock and invest in public services. Thatcher did the opposite and the effects of her reign are still felt in areas of Scotland and the rest of the "UK".

Ok, I'll take the bait. First of all, Maggie Thatcher's 'Right to Buy' policy was one of the best things she ever did as PM. Millions of working class folk now enjoy the capitalist dream of owning property/properties thanks to that dear old lady.

I remember being scared of council estates as a child (in the 1970s and 1980s), because I associated them with criminality and immorality. We have Maggie to thank for making council estates more respectable today, since owner-occupiers tend to care for their local environment.

Also, government regulation of private business is always a bad idea.

[...] The same structure that makes our current political situation hopeless should make feminists today hopeful despite Giles Coren’s stupidity. This week he wrote an obnoxious and offensive article in the Daily Mail (the only possible kind of article in that publication) in response to the removal of Richard Keys and Andy Gray, the two trivial and unintelligent nonentities who have been fronting Sky’s football coverage since it began in the dark days of Thatcherism’s first flowering. They had been caught on mike making misogynist comments about a woman referee, and it was delightful to see them losing their jobs as a result. Coren’s response – not original: it’s a standard idiot thing to say – is that their removal typifies a climate in Britain today which is virulently anti-men. We, he argues, are the new underdog, unable to function according to what he believes is our ‘biological imperative’ to belittle women. There’s a fine and well-reasoned evisceration of it by Sarah (I’m afraid I don’t know her surname) on the Scottish Socialist Youth website here. [...]
